RtI - Response to Intervention

As part of school-wide efforts to improve student achievement, The Kailua Elementary School students are given STAR universal screenings, four times per year to measure their progress in the curriculum over time.

Interventions (extra support) will be provided as needed to all students who did not meet expected levels of achievement in reading.  This system of providing intervention based on individual student needs is called Response to Intervention (RtI).

We provide Tier 2 and 3 levels of support as a pull out system. Our RtI Teachers provide support to the Tier 2 students by pushing into classrooms.  Tier 2 is meant to provide a limited, but targeted support system for students who struggle to meet grade-level performance standards. The goal of Tier 2 is to remediate academic skill deficits with the idea that in doing so, students will be successful in the Tier 1 program without support. Tier 2 students are provided with additional services four times a week.

Compared to Tier 2, Tier 3 is more explicit, focuses on the remediation of skills, is provided for a longer duration of time, and occurs in smaller groups. Tier 3 students also receives additional supports four times a week by the classroom teacher.

Our RtI Teachers provide data-driven and research-based instruction and interventions that match the needs of individual students to ensure that ALL children reach their fullest potential. We progress monitor quarterly, evaluate outcomes and determine next steps to meet ALL student needs.

Response to Intervention is a way to help all students succeed, including struggling learners.

Our goal is to prevent failure and make all students successful learners.
