Enrichment
Mr. Kent
Philosophy
The Kailua Elementary Enrichment Program offers opportunities for grades 3-6 students to learn at a more advanced and creative level but does not accelerate the student’s placement in his/her grade. Students will learn in more depth and breadth. The emphasis of the program is on the learning process and producing quality products.
Description
The Kailua Elementary School’s enrichment program is a STEM-based curriculum that includes an opportunity to solve real-world problems, participate in the First Lego League, and utilize the Kailua Elementary makerspace.
This is a pull-out program where students miss 2 hours of regular instruction on Friday afternoons. Students will also have the opportunity to come before and after school to work on their projects. Students will be required to make up work from their regular classroom and additional work at home may be required for enrichment projects.
Screening
Please understand that there is a screening and identification process. Students may be nominated by teachers, parents, and themselves. Consideration for selection is based on scholastic aptitude, scholastic achievement, test scores, teacher recommendations, and learning characteristics.
Expectations
Each enrichment student must sign a contract upon entering the program. Expectations include keeping up with their regular class work, maintaining quality work in the enrichment program, showing effort, demonstrating a growth mindset, and good citizenship. Each quarter we will assess whether it is in the student’s best interest to remain in this pullout program.
